What an exquisite CD! It contains a generous selection of Elizabethan and Jacobean lute songs by the illustrious John Dowland and his contemporaries, beautifully sung by countertenor Michael Chance, accompanied hand-in-glove by Christopher Wilson on the lute. The interaction between the two performers is uncanny, as if their very thoughts were converging at the exact same moment. The program is arranged well, with interludes for solo lute that break up any possible monotony. But such careful attention to text is not liable to bore, just astound. All similar collections contain different individual song selections, so the reference recordings do not refer to this specific selection, but merely serve to guide the listener to other fineRead more recordings of this delicate genre. The intimate, realistic Chandos sound couldn't be better.
