Notes and Editorial Reviews

The inclusion of Anne Sophie Mutter [in EMI's Great Artists of the Century series], perfectly justified by her artistry, is a little hampered by the fact that she has recorded primarily for DG. But a nifty bit of recoupling by EMI delivers a stylish, if stylistically rather old-fashioned, disc of three Mozart violin concertos and the Adagio in E, K261. Of her accompanists, Sir Neville Marriner and the ASMF are a little more lively than Riccardo Muti and the Philharmonia. But what playing from Mutter: there are enough glorious examples of deluxe violin technique and temperament to earn this disc a warm welcome.

The Mozart concerto, recorded in 1981, is the
Read more oldest item here. When it first appeared on CD a few years later, there were very few recordings of these violin concertos available in the new format. Now there are many more, including a more recent recording by Mutter herself on DG, but this older version still holds up well. If its chief virtues are the clarity and technical proficiency of Mutter’s playing, coupled with a tendency to linger and enjoy the incidental delights of the music, then those are recommendable qualities in my book.
