Notes and Editorial Reviews

Anne Sophie Mutter; Berlin Philharmonic/Herbert von Karajan. Deutsche Grammophon 400 064-2 (recorded 1982).

Mutter’s account is filled with electricity and a devil-may-care, all-stops-out vibrancy that conveys a real sense of occasion. Keeping textures lean, Karajan draws playing of hushed intensity from the Berliners, occasionally imparting an almost Tristan-esque sultriness to the reading. The chemistry makes for a suspenseful, ultimately thrilling performance. DG’s engineering brings Mutter a little too close – her mike seems to be positioned right over the strings – and the sound has the analytic quality typical of the label in this vintage. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD
