Risk and revelation are not priorities: these performances offer witty, finely modulated conversation, with the Op. 30 No. 3 the wittiest of all. So stable is the partnership of Perlman and Ashkenazy in its empathy of rhythm, scale and accent, that the harmonic adventuring of its first movement finds itself with an exciting foil. Similarly, in the first of the Op. 30, the understated shadowplay of the opening counterpoint prepares the ear for the characteristic honeyed vibrato which Perlman reserves for the slow movement, its every phrase exquisitely tapered and balanced over elastic piano phrasing.

The A minor Sonata from Op. 23, a tense, austere contemporary of the Spring, is played with shrewdly judged expectancy. The
Read more trick is to maintain both tension and blitheness between the lilt of its first two themes, and Perlman and Ashkenazy manage it with their typically relaxed alertness, which creates constantly self-renewing energy.
