Notes and Editorial Reviews

Most complete sets of the Mozart piano concertos feature an ensemble let by the soloist, and good as many of them are, there is still no substitute for a great conductor leading a first class ensemble. So I am going to hold off speaking about Schiff for a moment to focus on Sandor Végh, who was an absolute genius, and whose recordings ought to be mandatory listening for anyone who cares about the music of the classical period. Végh’s achievements as a violinist the Beethoven quartets are well known and rightly acclaimed, and he brought the same gifts to his conducting. Briefly put: he had the ability to make this music sing through phrasing, rhythm, and pacing, perfectly realizing the
Read more vocal ideal of classical period music in a way that quite frankly makes consideration of “period” style completely irrelevant.

Consider a tiny detail: the rhythmic accompaniment to the “hunting” finale of Concerto No. 15. In Végh’s conception, even a simple line of repeated notes chugs along with irresistible personality, and it allows Schiff to launch the main theme with delicious buoyancy and verve. Or listen to how Végh phrases the opening of Concerto No. 17, with its sighing motives. The music almost seems to speak. Mozart’s concertos are designed to highlight two characters: the soloist and the orchestra, and here, aided and abetted by some magnificent woodwind playing, we finally have these mini-dramas realized with all of the necessary expressive variety. There isn’t a single performance on period instruments that comes anywhere close to what Végh and his players realize in most of these recordings, and the evidence is right there for anyone who cares to listen.

As for Schiff, it’s not damning his achievement with faint praise to suggest that he is wholly at one with the conception. He modulates the tone of his modern piano to the point where he truly becomes “first among equals” with the orchestra. This means he has a modern beauty of timbre and the possibility of legato (especially in the slow movements) allied to the rhythmic crispness and dynamic range of a fortepiano. As you can hear in the coda of Concerto No. 17?s finale, for example, the result permits a wonderfully witty dialogue between the soloist and the various sections of the orchestra. Schiff’s polish certainly does not preclude expressive depth either, whether in the despairing slow movement of Concerto No. 18, or in the minor key concertos Nos. 20 and 24.

Perhaps only in Concerto No. 27 does the performance sound slightly precious for a moment or two, but given the daunting task of capturing all of this music in a single set, the magnitude of Schiff and Végh’s achievement can’t be minimized. The engineers have also succeeded brilliantly in placing the piano within the orchestra, in a realistic perspective, so that every delightful detail tells naturally. This is just an incredibly great set, a huge pleasure from start to finish.
