Notes and Editorial Reviews

Sir Peter Pears recorded Britten's Serenade on three occasions, but the only version which features the horn soloist for whom the part was written and the composer as conductor, is this first (4), wartime effort (produced by Boyd Neel, we learn for the first time). A lovely performance, with Pears in youthfully fresh voice, and a good transfer, apart from a hint of flutter in Brain's tone which emanates from the tape transfer rather than the original 78s. Pears also recorded the Michelangelo Sonnets during the war, but for HMV. By 1954, when he re-recorded the work, his voice had already become drier, although his performance remained uniquely authoritative-the work was written for him, as was Winter Words, completed just a year before this Read more recording. Both cycles are in good mono sound.
