Notes and Editorial Reviews

'The People United Will Never Be Defeated!' was commissioned by pianist Ursula Oppens as a companion piece to Beethoven's monumental Diabelli Variations. It is based on the Chilean song 'El pueblo unido jamás seráa vencido,' a street singer's chant of political protest set to music by Sergio Ortega (1938-2003). The song became an anthem for the Chilean Resistance. There are thirty-six variations organized in groups of six. The tune is so catchy and the variations are so skillfully written that the theme stays in your head no matter how sparse or complex the textures become. The variations combine traditional techniques of the great classical composers of the past with the daring sensibilities of our time. Frederic Rzewski Read more (b.1938) is the distinguished composer of mostly chamber, vocal and piano works that have been performed throughout the world. To quote Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians (Nicolas slonimsky, ed.), 'his works present a shimmering distant vision of optimistic, positivistic anti-music.' As a pianist, Baker goes on to describe Rzewski as a 'granitically overpowering piano technician, capable of depositing huge boulders os sonoristic material across the keyboard without actually wrecking the instrument.' 65 minutes, colour, stereo.
