Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is Tommi Hakala’s second recording, but the first to feature him as solo artist. The young Finnish baritone has assembled a concert of mostly Romantic-era material with two final items by Mozart. There is an enthusiasm to his singing that is highly infectious. His light baritone has a dark quality that lends itself to much of this material. It is a difficult voice to describe. It is not a velvety smooth or honeyed baritone; he has a palette of colors that constantly surprises the listener. Occasionally, there is a rough edge he employs to punctuate a phrase; and if there is a bit of strangulation here or a tremolo that emerges there, the passion of his singing is never less than convincing. This album held my attention from beginning Read more to end, even after repeated playing. Like many albums of the genre, the material is a mixture of the familiar and the rare. Frank’s aria from Puccini’s Edgar rarely makes a recital album.

The tempos are on the swift side. They aren’t rushed, but certainly keep the program moving. Eri Klas and the Tampere PO share Hakala’s passion for the music. Another plus is the clear, immediate sound of this Ondine recording. It’s almost as if Hakala was in the room with you. I stumbled upon a Web site that features video snippets of Hakala in concert. The passion and exuberance displayed in this studio recording was visually evident as he was seen in the final moments of Ford’s aria from Falstaff. The audience bursts into applause and enthusiastic cheers, Hakala can’t contain himself and practically leaps to the podium and hugs the conductor.

This is the third album featuring up-and-coming baritones that has come to me in the last few months. EMI has a debut disc for Jonathan Lemalu, and Mariusz Kwiecien is featured on a Naxos disc along with four other young artists. There is very little duplication of material. Hakala and Lemalu both sing “Hai già vinta la causa!” from Le nozze di Figaro; Hakala and Kwiecien both sing “Son io, mio Carlo” from Verdi’s Don Carlo. Lemalu and Kwiecien have similar rich, creamy baritones. Hakala has a noticeably different sound and timbre. All three baritones have garnered praise and prizes and probably will join Simon Keenlyside and Bryn Terfel as baritones in great demand.
