Tchaikovsky loved by two great musicians March 12, 2013 By S. Southall (Mooroolbark, Vic) See All My Reviews "John Waterhouse wrote about Britten, aged 25, playing a masterly performance (spontaneously, at a party) of Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto 'con evident amore' and at a much later age Britten's deep love of Tchaikovsky is displayed in these performances. We can see how Britten lives the Romeo and Juliet overture as he conducts it; how attentively Rostropovich and Britten associate to bring out the beauties of this music. Rostropovich plays with mellow lyricism as well as sunny clarity, and the camera focuses on his hands and the subtle interaction with the conductor. Watching Britten direct his forces is illuminating as the camera follows his movements also. This is a fine film of a relatively rare event, as Tchaikovsky was not part of Britten's frequent repertoire. It is Tchaikovsky as loved by two great musicians at a fascinating moment in musical history." Report Abuse
