Notes and Editorial Reviews

Prague-born Ondrej Kukal is a multi-talented individual. Born in 1964, this violinist, conductor, and composer has performed around the world and his broad scope of performance activities seems to inform his music making rather than limiting it. Many violinists turn to conducting later in their career; perhaps Kukal, who was born in Prague and studied there at the conservatoire under Joseph Vlach, will focus exclusively on that discipline later in life. Or perhaps composition! Compositionally, his violin concerto is not at all terse or musically forbidding; it is a vibrant and inviting piece dressed in mid-twentieth century vocabulary. There are some clear influences here, and Kukal's work is somewhat derivative of Shostakovich and Janacek, Read more among others. 'Danse Symphonique,' an altogether more mature work, smacks a bit of Stravinsky, Bartók, and Shostakovich, especially the latter insofar as a cinematic sound is concerned. The "Present" Duo for violin and cello is given an excellent performance by Jana Vlachova and Mikael Ericsson; the motoric rhythms and technical effects are very effective. The string quartet, with Kukal playing the second violin part, is a work worthy of further study and re-listening. Read less
