Notes and Editorial Reviews

In the late 16th century, the man whom most Spaniards considered to be "the most outstanding in his time, in the Art of Music" is a composer now known to too few people-Francisco Guerrero. Guerrero's music represents the highest achievements of the Spanish Renaissance. In the age of Palestrina, Lassus, Byrd, and Victoria, Guerrero wrote cosmopolitan high polyphony that retains an individual stamp, especially in his expressive use of vocal register. Ample evidence of Guerrero's skill is found in this present recording, which attempts to recreate the Requiem Mass and Burial Service that was celebrated in Seville's great Cathedral upon the composer's death in late 1599. Under the sensitive direction of Michael Noone, the players and Read more singers of the Orchestra of the Renaissance offer precise and passionate readings of Guerrero's polyphonic mass movements and the traditional chanted Latin mass movements. The production quality of the recording is high, lovingly capturing the acoustics of the church space. Read less
