Notes and Editorial Reviews

Handel's recorder sonatas are some of the most important instrumental works of the first half o fhte eighteenth century. Their interest lies as much in the expressiveness of their cantabile lines as in the surprising density of the continuo part, which intensifies the discource and sometimes even outdoes the recorder part in terms of virtuosity. The numerous alternations in the manuscripts themselves show Handel's desire to find the most elegant formulations for these works, and bear witness to his continuing interest in the sonatas, which are some of the most outstanding works in the recorder repertoire.
