Notes and Editorial Reviews

As a further example of just how far the Met Orchestra has come under Levine's 20-year guidance, this all-Wagner showcase will serve very nicely. Strings have a healthy sheen about them, the brass-playing is always excitingly full-throated and fearless in attack; only the winds seem to me to lack that last ounce of personality and projection—witness their curiously bland contribution to the Meistersinger Prelude. Throughout, Levine directs with characteristic energy, enjoyable gusto and, as the stirring account of the Rienzi Overture demonstrates, no mean flair.
