Great achievement from a mature interpretationOctober 7, 2013By R. Galarza See All My Reviews"As far as I know, Bernstein was not very fond of conducting Bruckner, with the sole excemption of the Ninth symphony, as the former attempted twice on record to show us what he's got from this complex music work. For a great surprise, his last rendition with the Wiener Philharmoniker on DG is the best and perhaps one of the top 5 of the repertoire from great conductors alongside Giulini, Karajan, Schuricht and Wand, just to name a few enough to complete the diamond five. His tempos are expansive and there are some sublime moments, but it is definitively not THE ultimate one in squeezing the last drop of emotional juice doing this as well as, and in contrast to, Giulini's achievement; in some passages it looses, just for the equivalent of an eye glimpse, the coherence and breaks the musical phrasing just to recover it a few seconds later, not that bad but neither pristine. It is obvious that Lenny tried to present us how Bruckner would sound if conducted just in the same freestyle as Mahler permits in his symphonies; nevetheless, although there are some interesting developments applying this style, it is simple not natural for Bruckner, rather it tends to sound impossed. Finally, this is the perfect CD for Bernstein's die hards; for the rest of us, it is a different point of view of a great work with some experimentation from someone who knows how to do it. Enjoy!"Report Abuse
