Notes and Editorial Reviews

Released to commemorate the centenary of Carlo Maria Giulini (born 14 May 1914), this 15-CD set celebrates recordings made with the famed Viennese orchestras. Repertoire includes the complete Brahms symphonies, Bruckner Symphonies Nos. 7, 8 and 9, and a complete recording of Verdi’s Rigoletto. The set also includes the first international CD release of An die Nachgeborenen by 20th-century Austrian composer Gottfried von Einem.

"The great Italian maestro Carlo Maria Giulini (1914–2005) had close associations with both the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Symphony, captured in this rewarding set of live and studio recordings. Giulini conducts varied works, including symphonies by Bruckner and Brahms.

From original release: Vienna Philharmonic/Carlo Maria Giulini. DG 419 627-2 [Symphony No. 7] (recorded June 1986).

Giulini’s account of the [Bruckner] Seventh with the VPO is most beautifully played, and very well recorded – the sound is much more pleasing, in fact, than on recording of the same symphony, with the same orchestra in the same hall, that DG made three years later for Karajan. This is a noble reading with a sure sense of flow and connection, distinguished by a consoling gentleness and magnificent beauty of tone. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.

From original release: Vienna Philharmonic/Carlo Maria Giulini. DG 427 345-2 [Symphony No. 9] (recorded 1988)

Giulini’s recording [of the Bruckner Symphony No. 9] with the Vienna Philharmonic is most impressive, not least from a sonic standpoint. The orchestra’s playing is breathtakingly powerful, especially that of the brass, and the whole is formidably well recorded. In his tempo transitions, Giulini makes effective use of rubato, and his treatment of the slow movement is grand and broadly scaled. He is wonderfully gentle in the score’s final pages; this distant ending conveys both a remarkable feeling of resignation, and a sense that its composer, so intent on the world to come, had already crossed over. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.
