Notes and Editorial Reviews

The programme is winning, the playing spruce and the ‘4D’ sound remarkably lifelike. Kodaly’s Magyar Rondo opens as if in imitation of Bartok’s Romanian Folkdances (of two years earlier), though what actually emerges is a sequence of original Hungarian folk tunes – the principal (recurring) piece slow, the others fast – scored for strings, two clarinets (one in B flat, the other E flat) and bassoons. It’s a delightful work and a remarkable performance, not least for the way the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra cope with gipsy slides and teasing rubato: once the action hots up, you could as well be listening to a top-class Hungarian folk band.

Summer Evening also incorporates folk (or at least folk-style) material, albeit with a
Read more certain formal ingenuity; the overall tone suggests an affectionate though unsentimental pastoral sound-scape. Again, the scoring is relatively light (although the wind line-up is heavier than in the Rondo), which of course suits the Orpheus well... this is an enjoyable programme and the Rondo in particular is a real delight.
