Eine kleine Nachtmusik is beautifully played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, who bring to it both a silky sound and an exceptionally alert style. In the E flat Divertimento, the wind players distinguish themselves as clearly as their string colleagues do in the Nachtmusik.
The principal factor of the disc is of course the Eine kleine Nachtmusik Serenade, a favourite in no danger of oblivion. But it is not always quite so beautifully played as it is here by the American Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, who bring to it both a silky sound and an exceptionally alert style.
Another factor is the inclusion, along with the Nachtmusik, of a group of other serenades and divertimentos of Mozart; in particular theseRead more include some which, agreeably, offer a degree of instrumental contrast, adding a few wind players to the basic orchestra of strings.
The E flat Divertimento turns out to be one of those enchanting ones for six wind only: two each of oboes, horns, and bassoons. In this the wind players of the Orpheus orchestra distinguish themselves as clearly as their string colleagues did in the Nachtmusik. The following D major Divertimento — a very early work of Mozart's, though you could not reasonably guess this from the quality of the music — adds to the strings of the orchestra, flute, oboe, bassoon and an unusual complement (for Mozart) of no less than four horns, written for somewhat exact exactingly (that is, exacting on the hand-horn). The process produces richer chords than the orchestral horns normally offered until more than half-a-century later.
