Notes and Editorial Reviews

Schwarzkopf’s 1953 recording is still very much among the most prized versions of this music, authoritative with regard to both vocalism and keenly observed interpretation, and to my mind far preferable to her 1965 stereo remake with George Szell and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, which found her in less firm voice, with the first song transposed a half-tone down... The vulnerability of timbre that’s so meaningful an asset of Schwarzkopf’s 1953 Four Last Songs is equally important, along with her ease of expression and interpretive acumen, to the success of her thoroughly convincing Arabella excerpts recorded the following year.
