Notes and Editorial Reviews

Seiji Ozawa's version of the Suite from The Miraculous Mandarin is very good, if a touch lacking in both sleaze and ferocity, but Rafael Kubelik's interpretation of the Concerto is one of my "desert island" recordings. The Boston Symphony, you may recall, premiered the work, and Kubelik conducted it often (and recorded it more than once). The combination of the two is inspirational: it would be hard to imagine a more perfect performance. The creepy trumpet duet in the introduction has a timbre that sends a shiver down the spine; the "games" in the second movement seldom have been phrased so elegantly. Bartók's central elegy is harrowing; the "interrupted"
Read more intermezzo is gorgeously played by the strings, and the central parody of Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony is wonderfully tipsy. As for the finale, it offers an ideal combination of excitement and clean articulation from the violins. The sonics also rank with the finest from DG in Boston. Simply put, this "on demand" release from Arkivmusic.com belongs in every collection.
