Notes and Editorial Reviews

Bartók: The Six String Quartets. The Juilliard String Quartet. Sony 77119 [3 CDs].

There was a time when the Bartók quartets were the toughest challenge a string quartet could face, and when no one played them as well as the Juilliard Quartet. Yet the foursome’s path-breaking 1965 recording of the complete set for Columbia Masterworks was never reissued on CD. Thanks to ArkivMusic, this extraordinary document of a great ensemble blazing away at great music is now back in the catalog, a reminder of the revolutionary impact both the music and these performers had on the 20th century. Recorded at Columbia’s 30th Street studio in May and September of 1963, having been honed to perfection in the crucible of
Read more performance, the accounts still sound "hot" 47 years later, still convey how edgy and exotic Bartók’s idiom remained nearly two decades after his death. For the Juilliards the recording was a tour de force. As for Bartók...well, this was how the six quartets truly entered the repertory, and how my generation came to know them.

The sound, outstanding for the time, is dry, close-miked, and analytic - typical of Columbia’s engineering at the time and ideal for this music, allowing the listener to hear everything right down to the page turns. Arkiv’s remastering is superb.

still indispensable March 30, 2012 By P. Jacob (London, ON) See All My Reviews "Like so many, I learned the Bartok Quartets through these performances from the original lps (later supplemented by the Vegh). Since giving away my vinyl collection a dozen years ago I haven't heard them, and having enjoyed many other versions, including the earlier and later Julliard and "post-Julliard" versions from the Emerson and Tokyo, I suspected that I could do without Julliard II on cd, which in any case, wasn't available. How wrong was I?! Despite the dated stereo sound, the astonishing finesse and sheer musical intelligence of the playing are perfectly fresh and utterly thrilling. If you love these gorgeous works you can't afford not to know these recordings." Report Abuse
