Notes and Editorial Reviews

This Warner release, identical to the previous EMI set, contains some familiar favorites whose qualities are well known. In brief, the Bruckner 9, Mahler 1, Berlioz Romeo and Juliet excerpts, and Brahms 4 are all very good to superb, and certainly worth owning both for the excellence of the playing and the insights that Giulini brings to the music. They are also livelier (in the case of Bruckner and Brahms) than his later DG remakes, although the DG Bruckner 9 is an amazing performance, very different than this one.

For an excellent example of Giulini’s ability to personalize music that you thought you already knew well, consider the coda of the Bruckner 9 first movement. It features amazingly transparent textures and
Read more harmonic clarity at high volume, but it never sounds fussy or mannered. The finale of Mahler 1, too, offers a remarkable combination of grandeur and savagery. At 20 minutes, it’s actually a touch on the quick side, but it projects a sort of magisterial deliberation that minimizes any suggestion of crudeness or vulgarity.

The Beethoven 7 and two Stravinsky Suites from The Firebird and Petrushka are good, but hardly essential. The Beethoven lacks dynamism in its quick movements (and let’s not forget there are three of them), the Stravinsky–well, it’s asking for little beyond accuracy to make its points, and Giulini and his players certainly are that– but there are other performances more compelling still, with a touch more fire in their belly. Nevertheless, some of this material has never been available domestically on individual CDs, so if you didn’t get the prior set, grab this one while you can.

Giulini was such a serious and committed musician that even where he doesn’t sweep the field you will almost never be disappointed. For the really good stuff, it’s worth it–and the sound always was and still is very fine.
