Notes and Editorial Reviews

Master trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger plays three centuries of trumpet music, including the popular sounds of the Baroque, the great classical concertos by Haydn and Hummel, and more recent works that Hardenberger has championed.

R E V I E W S:

With his collection of trumpet concertos, including the two finest in the repertoire, those by Haydn and Hummel (the latter played in E rather than the usual E flat) a new star appeared in the firmament. The vibrant Swedish trumpeter, Hâkan Hardenberger produced playing that was as dazzlingly brilliant as it was infectiously enjoyable. Sir Neville Marriner and his Academy provided polished stylish accompaniments throughout. With other works by Stamitz and Hertel
Read more this is now, in my view, the finest single collection of trumpet concertos in the catalogue.

– Ivan March, Gramophone [12/1988], reviewing Haydn, Hummel, Hertel & Stamitz

This disc epitomizes the technical and musical elevation of the solo trumpet in the late twentieth century, of which Håkan Hardenberger is the most consistently lauded exponent. Indeed, the Swede is a model of the supremely self-contained, self-aware and unphased designer-executor.... In this varied solo repertoire he finds his true vocation: a place where the epic gesture of Blake Watkins and the gently evocative elegy of Takemitsu's Paths encapsulate the remarkably potent medium of the trumpet monologue. A very fine achievement.

– Gramophone [11/1996], reviewing Henze, Berio, Takemitsu, Tisne, Watkins, Kagel & Ligeti

The slightly garrulous quality of Virgil Thomson's At the Beach is endearing and Glazunov's Album Leaf is effectively romantic. Best are the quirky items like Ibert's Impromptu with angular jazzy rhythmic feeling, and Marcel Bitsch's witty Variations on a Theme of Domenico Scarlatti, where there is some marvellously crisp articulation from Hardenberger, precise in the most captivating way. He plays with superb aplomb throughout and is just as communicative with a mute in Pontinen's crossover piece, The girl from Brasil which ends the recital atmospherically. Vividly and realistically recorded too.

– Ivan March, Gramophone [6/1989], reviewing Thomson, Glazunov, Ibert, Bitsch, Pontinen, Hohne, Dinicu, Mendelssohn, Waldteufel, Bernstein, Weide & Roger
