Notes and Editorial Reviews

First, let’s discuss the performances. Like most artists active in the go-go decades at the end of the last century, Neville Marriner made too many recordings. However, as long as he stuck with his own Academy of St Martin in the Fields (which, by the way, contrary to its name is a church smack dab in the middle of London at one end of Trafalgar Square), they always maintained a certain basic level of technical quality. Some of his later work, however, betrayed a generalized blandness that could turn lethal, as in his deathly dull Beethoven cycle, or his incomprehensible disc of Respighi Roman tone poems, deleted more or less on the day that it was released (thank God).

That said, and for much of his career, Marriner set an
Read more impeccable standard in performances of a vast repertoire of baroque, classical, neoclassical, and modern works for chamber orchestra, and it’s a credit to his achievement in baroque and classical music that his best recordings more than withstand competition from the subsequent period-instrument crowd. It’s impossible to list the amount of music we first learned from his always fresh and immaculately turned interpretations: Rossini string sonatas, concertos by Corelli, Vivaldi’s La stravaganza, Telemann suites, Handel’s Op. 3–and all of these are included here. If I had to choose a personal favorite, it would have to be the eight Boyce symphonies. Before Marriner, who even knew these little gems existed?

Marriner was equally adept at contemporary music, especially in a neoclassical vein. His disc of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella and Capriccio (with John Ogdon) remains a classic, as does his pairing of Bizet and Prokofiev symphonies, Scandinavian string music, and of course his iconic album of American music, including a reference recording of Ives’ Third Symphony. Even Strauss’ Metamorphosen and Schoeberg’s Verklärte Nacht are transformed (I should say “transfigured”) in these lithe, transparent, yet always sensitive and expressively apt recordings. As a Mendelssohn conductor Marriner had few peers, and here we get the Octet, the Scottish and Italian symphonies, the Double Piano Concerto (Odgon and Lucas), the Concerto for Piano and Strings in A minor, and String Symphony No. 12–quite a haul.

In romantic repertoire Marriner generally chose wisely. His disc of Tchaikovsky, Dvorák, and Grieg suites and serenades for strings is a classic. Wagner’s Siegfried-Idyll is one of the few non-boring versions on disc. Music of Fauré suits Marriner’s keen ear for detail and ability to play delicately and without fussiness. And these versions of some of the major classics–Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem and 5 early-ish symphonies, Bach’s Orchestral Suites, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons–have all held up amazingly well. You may prefer different performances, but you can’t deny the quality of these.

Now, for the bad news–it’s not terrible, but really strange. Some bozo at Decca decided that “The Argo Years” does not mean the Argo years. First, Marriner’s iconic recording of Handel’s Op. 6 concertos has been omitted, as has his outstanding Bartók disc (which does appear in the 10-disc Marriner & The Academy set–conveniently out of print at present). Instead, the last four discs of this 28-CD set consist of ASV recordings that, while good enough, neither belong here nor replace repertoire that should have been included.

Indeed, because of the inclusion of The English Connection single disc, we are denied Marriner’s superb Vaughan Williams and Tippett compilations, both of which were made for Argo. Now where is the sense in that? Thank heaven that Australian Eloquence has kept them in print, but really, is there any excuse? I mean, when a British label featuring British artists fails to make the obligatory obeisance to some of the lynchpins of British music, then something is very, very wrong. It’s all the more annoying because it would have been so easy to take all of Marriner’s Argo recordings and just dump them in a box–that’s all collectors are asking for. Completeness. Why is that so difficult?

All things considered, you shouldn’t hesitate to get this box. These excellent performances will both reward your attention and provide a fine background while you curse at Decca.
