Major purchasing priorities among the latest batch of DG Originals include Shura Cherkassky's 1951-5 recordings of the first two Tchaikovsky piano concertos, the Second featuring Siloti's abridged slow movement and the most vivacious finale imaginable. The playing in the First Concerto creates a dazzling array of tonal colours, though the manner of phrasing is sometimes distinctly unusual. Leopold Ludwig and Richard Kraus conduct the Berlin Philharmonic (in Nos. I and 2, respectively) and the sound quality is truthful to the excellent mono originals.
