A Stunning Beethoven Ninth May 2, 2016 By owen  r. (lakewood, CA) See All My Reviews "Experts differ on whether Karajan's 1963 or this 1976 recording of the Ninth is his best. I'm not going into that spider's nest, however, I've got the CD version of this performance and in my amateur opinion I think it is one of the best Beethoven Ninths (topped only by the 1954 mono recording of Furtwangler in SACD format--see my 09-14-14 review). The CD version of this performance is marvelous and a nice recording despite its age and provenance-- surely a reference recording. This Blu-ray issue raises our consideration to another level. When I fist played this I thought this is probably as close as we will ever come to hearing the master tape. You can hear inner detail clearly that you might not have noticed on the CD and the recording on the whole is stunning. If you have the equipment to play Blu-ray you really should splurge and get this." Report Abuse
