Notes and Editorial Reviews

Hot on the heels of the splendid Dutoit/Decca version coupling all three of Respighi's Roman suites, Roman Festivals as well as the other two, comes this formidable competitor. Just as Kertesz did on his excellent 1969 Decca LP, de Waart prefers as the third item (an equally generous coupling) a more obviously popular Respighi piece, the suite for small orchestra freely using baroque material, The Birds. Though I still keep a slight preference for the Montreal readings with Dutoit a degree more expressive, in his urgency often bringing extra flair, de Waart's have many of the same qualities, using an orchestra which like the Montreal band has a more warmly European style than most of its rivals in North America. Some may well feel that de Read more Waart's slightly more detached view avoids vulgarity more effectively than Dutoit's, but the two Roman pieces here bring music to wallow in, not to take too seriously. The fullness of the Philips recording, in most ways matching the superlative Montreal sound, even in the big, fruity bass response (so important when the organ is included), adds to the power and conviction of the performances. The bass response is no less accurate in the baroque suite, but there in the delicate "Preludio" (long used as the signature tune for the BBC TV antiques programme, Going for a Song) the very weight of bass makes the orchestation seem all the more anachronistic. But no one goes to a suite like this for baroque authenticity, rather for charm and colour, and that quality de Waart and his fine orchestra provide in full measure with their delightfully sprung rhythms. The Kertesz, now available as a mid-price reissue, brought outstanding sound for its time, but plainly digital sound of the quality the Philips engineers provide takes priority, and the performances are just as warmly responsive.
