Notes and Editorial Reviews

Includes full libretto with English translation.

This live 1969 broadcast performance of Debussy’s operatic masterpiece, one of the seminal vocal works of the twentieth century, joins the Grand Tier catalogue with full documentation and a complete libretto newly translated. Real French singers in the three principal roles make a vast difference stylistically, and a major world conductor at the height of his fresh powers is a special bonus.

Including a 72-page booklet with historic photos, a complete French libretto and new original English translation, and an essay on the performance by Robert Levine, this sweeping masterpiece stars authoritative French stars from opera’s golden era with Lorin Maazel at

“This opera, mysterious, ethereal, indefinably beautiful, makes us feel deeply. The music–or the effect of the music (you may substitute ‘impression’ for ‘effect’)—washes over us, moves us and makes us wonder. Like the greatest of art, it stirs the soul and fills it with awe. Sonically handsome and featuring three of the major French-speaking singers of their generation in the three main roles, this recording and performance will work on your senses. Prepare them for an adventure.” — Robert Levine

"It hasn’t been all that long since I reviewed a previous Opera d’Oro issue of this same performance. This release is part of what the company calls its “Grand Tier” series. Aside from its silly cover art, this is a superior production, with more thorough annotations and even a legible French/English libretto. The sound remains about the same—restricted in dynamic and frequency range, but quite clean with minimal distortion. I still think that Lorin Maazel’s conducting, superbly controlled though it may be, is on the fussy side, but otherwise not disturbing. Those who prefer their Mélisandes to be wispy and girlish may be put off by Jeanette Pilou’s more robust, healthy one, but she makes a good sound and obviously knows the role’s routine. Gabriel Bacquier’s Golaud is the equal of any in my experience, capturing the jealous husband’s tenderness and bottled-up anger in equal measure. The other roles are well done." -- James Miller, Fanfare [7/2008]
