These are all vivid interpretations, with the greatest imagination lavished on even the trifles. Indeed, Barbirolli reminds us as Beecham did—that the Valse triste only suffers from endless performances of the Palm Court sort and that it is really, as he is quoted as saying, "an exquisite miniature tone poem".
