Notes and Editorial Reviews

"This first recording of Paderewski's only opera fills a big gap in the Polish discography. Manru is indeed Paderewski's biggest work, and although his fame ensured that it travelled well in the years after its premiere at Dresden in 1901...since World War II performances have been few and far between, even in Poland...It took [Paderewski] nearly a decade to complete the opera, which may account for the mixture of styles: Tchaikovsky and Wagner are audible influences, yet this 'lyric drama' (as its composer called it) is a characteristic piece of Polish late Romanticism...Ewa Michnik, the indefatigable chief of Wroclaw's Lower Silesian Opera, draws warm playing in an account that never lacks conviction."
