Bartok never heard his first violin concerto in its original form. The product of his love affair for Stefi Geyer, a young violinist, the first movement eventually found a home as the first of his "Two Portraits". The concerto was reassembled after his death, and the piece has never been as popular as the magnificent Second Concerto, one of the supreme masterpieces in the medium. Both works have been very lucky on disc, and this new recording is no exception. György Pauk plays both works with excellent intonation, secure technique, and a sure sense of style. Tempos in the outer movements of the Second Concerto are a bit on the slow side, but never excessively so; Pauk and his conductor really breathe with the music. It's a very Romantic, rhapsodic interpretation, made all the more impressive by a spacious recording that allows the orchestra plenty of room to expand, but never at the expense of the soloist. In fact, the first movement of the First Concerto and the nocturnal slow movement of the Second are among the most poetic and atmospheric on disc. The competition in this repertoire is very stiff, beginning with Fricsay/Varga on DG and running to more recent versions such as Fischer/Zehetmair (Berlin Classics), Ozawa/Mutter(DG), and the new Boulez/Shaham (DG), but these versions hold their own in this select company. A fine achievement at a great price. [11/22/1999]
