Notes and Editorial Reviews

Sinopoli is himself a composer whose style often recalls that of Alban Berg, so it's no surprise that he turns in a very personal, but also very beautiful performance of the haunting Violin Concerto. There are many ways to approach this work, which has an equal foot in both the Romantic and contemporary music worlds. Sinopoli's approach is thoroughly Romantic: lush, languorous, not as disciplined or clear as some, but always passionate. His soloist, Reiko Watanabe, is of similar mind. There have been more virtuosic performances of the solo part, but Watanabe sounds totally involved in the music's message of life, death, and transfiguration. Even better, Sinopoli directs a marvelous performance of the Chamber Concerto. Often considered to be Read more Berg's most cerebral and difficult work, in the hands of these players the piece sounds as if it came from the pen of the composer of the Violin Concerto, and that's no mean achievement. A fine disc, then, in every respect.
