Notes and Editorial Reviews

Hermann Baumann is a horn player of skill and sensitivity. He contributes a helpful article in the CD booklet reminding us that the Strauss concertos were composed at an astonishing interval of 60 years, and explains the importance of the Weber Concertino as the supreme work for the natural horn. However, purchasers of this fine disc will be more interested in the music than the history and they are well served by conductor, orchestra and soloist alike. The recorded balance is spacious with no undue highlighting of the soloist, yet all nuances in these enjoyable works can be savoured as at a live performance.

-- John Borwick, Gramophone [6/1985]

Strauss performed by the master April 9, 2014 By Marguerite M. (Missoula, MT) See All My Reviews "I narrate the local broadcasts for our Missoula Symphony, and at the end of April we have the Strauss No. 1 on the program. Sure enough, in our record library, I had --an LP and only and LP. So I went for Hermann Baumann on CD, and I sure wasn't disappointed, since I knew his work. The wonderful addition to the program was the Weber Concertino, which I had read about several years ago and heard on the radio about a month ago. Great performances, great music!" Report Abuse
