Notes and Editorial Reviews

Here are all the Debussy recordings Leopold Stokowski made during his alliance with the Capitol label in the late 1950s. They sounded great on LP, better on EMI's late-'80s CD reissues, and absolutely breathtaking in this latest incarnation. EMI's open and airy new transfers transport you into the orchestra's lap, where from the choicest seat in the house you can soak up the inner workings of Stoki's sensuous tonal palette. Even the top-notch soloists sound more colorful and expressive, from flute legend Julius Baker's sherry-tinged amble through the Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune to the wonderful, unaccredited violinist gracing Ibéria's third movement. All three
Read more movements of Ibéria, in fact, offer a delectable listening experience under Stoki's vivid, imaginative leadership, to say nothing of the tingling, ever-responsive French orchestra.

The aforementioned Prélude was a perpetual staple in Stoki's cupboard of sultry delights, and this 1957 reading is arguably the sexiest of the conductor's many recorded versions. Best of all, however, are the three Nocturnes featuring the London Symphony Orchestra. "Nuages" shimmers with luminous mystery, while by contrast the complexities of "Fêtes" are articulated to a mesmerizing degree at each dynamic extreme. What gorgeous balances Stoki achieves in "Sirenes", featuring a wordless women's chorus that manages to sound clear and ethereal at the same time. Stoki's orchestration of Clair de lune luxuriates in vulgar touches that you can't help but love. After all, few other conductors could bring them off with equal sincerity and conviction. Vintage Stokowski, choice Debussy. What else is there to say? Except buy this disc now, while you can. [7/15/2000]
