Notes and Editorial Reviews

In Mexico City in July of 1951, only months before she would mount the stage of Milan's La Scala opera house for the first time (and thereby change the course of opera forever), Maria Callas sang the title role in a thrilling production of Giuseppe Verdi's 'Aida.' Callas's later-in-life vocal decline is well known, but here, in this reissue of the live recording, she is at the peak of her vocal and dramatic powers. Her performance of "O patria mia" is, like so much of what she sang at this stage in her career, a transcendent balancing act between vocal control and dramatic abandon. The cast that surrounds her is comprised of the leading Verdi interpreters of the post-war era, including the tenor Mario Del Monaco and the bass Giuseppe Read more Taddei. Del Monaco's voice has a thrilling power that one might imagine could knock down a pyramid. Special mention must go to the little-known Oralia Domínguez, whose very appealing portrayal of Amneris will most certainly be a discovery for many. Read less
