Notes and Editorial Reviews

...The Milhaud and Honegger works [DG 449748] are in mono, the other 'single-channel' Originals being Karl Böhm's fine 1955 BPO recording of Beethoven's Missa solemnis (with Maria Stader, Marianna Radev, Anton Dermota, Josef Greindl and the St Hedwig's Cathedral Choir) and a 1956 BPO account of Reger's Mozart Variations, also under Böhm. Both share the same two-disc set, the Beethoven being firm and forthright (only Greindl occasionally lets the vocal team down), the Reger well played, judiciously paced though not quite the equal of Böhm's superb Saxon State Orchestra recording on EMI 78s.

Beautiful Performances April 11, 2013 By F. Leto (Tucson, AZ) See All My Reviews "Normally, one would like a stereo performance of the Missa Solemnis. This momo recording by Bohm is so clear and spacious one thinks it is in stereo. Bravo to DG. While there are many great performances of this work by other conductors, this one needs to be heard by anyone who loves this piece. Bohm's pacing is perfect, the choir sounds wonderful, and the soloists sing with great character. I love everything Dermota sings, and his contribution is perfect here. Stader also sings well, with a little bite in her solo. All in all a beautiful performance. In addition, the Reger Variations is exquisite. Normally, I find variations boring. Not this set of variations. Reger chooses a beautiful Mozart melody and keeps it interesting throughout the piece. I highly recommend this cd. Please, give it a chance." Report Abuse
