Notes and Editorial Reviews

Five years after finishing his Fifth Symphony, while he was on a trip to Odessa, Tchaikovsky began a sixth, based on a highly personal programme that he did not wish to reveal. This symphony was the 'Pathétique', whose subtitle (invented by the composer's brother but entirely approved by him) so perfectly sums up its content, certainly a reflection of the inner torments of this highly strung, unhappy man. But it would be a mistake to see the work as a mere sentimental outpouring. In fact, is there a more original piece in the nineteenth-century orchestral repertoire than this symphony? That first movement that opens unforgettably with its melancholy bassoon, the graceful yet disturbing waltz in 5/4 time, the contrast between the Read more ultra-brilliant march and the 'Adagio lamentoso' that concludes the work in a profound requiem - a requiem that, by an irony of fate, proved to be that of the composer himself, whose sudden death occurred less than a month after the triumphant premier in October 1893...It takes a great conductor to do full justice to every aspect of Tchaikovsky's creation. A challenge magnificently met by Riccardo Muti, a master of both classism and Romanticism, of symphonic and operatic repertoires. Here, in his first appearance in the Radio France collection, with the Orchestre National playing at white heat, he sets new standards in Tchaikovsky's supreme masterpiece. Read less
