Notes and Editorial Reviews

The recording of Symphony No. 3 on this album was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for "Best Orchestral Performance."
Gustav Mahler's Third Symphony is his longest, though in philosophical and aesthetic conception it is of the same monumental breadth as the Second, Eighth, and Ninth. Mahler's original movement titles--omitted in the final version--make it a great poem to nature. The opening movement was "Summer marches in," with its collection of march tunes and flourishes. This was followed by "What the flowers of the field tell me" and similar messages from the beasts of the field, man, the angels, and finally love. The final Adagio, which was booed at its premiere in Berlin, is quite likely the most beautiful stretch of music
Read more in all of Mahler, as it gradually builds from the simple string melody to the blazing finale for full orchestra.
Simon Rattle continues his series of Mahlerian triumphs here, drawing from his Birmingham players a performance ripe with raw energy and soothing tenderness. Eight of Mahler's settings of poems from 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' fill out the second disc; baritone Simon Keenlyside gives polished performances with a rich tone and easy upper register. His free, flowing coloratura in "Des Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt" is particularly notable. Altogether, a fine entry into Rattle's Mahler cycle. Read less
