Notes and Editorial Reviews

Szell gives, as one would expect, a commanding performance of this miracle of a symphony... Szell treats the music, not in what is commonly known as a 'Viennese' way but as a great symphonic work, seeing each movement as a whole, yet without losing the charm of the music... I especially like Szell's 'ringing' horns in that magical slow movement passage from bar 148 [in the 1st movement]... In the scherzo [Karl] Böhm is sedate compared with Szell's fine vigour—at a guess, almost half Szell's speed—and since Szell plays the lyrical passages with the greatest affection, my vote here goes entirely to Szell. The finale keeps its spin splendidly from both, yet—not the small point it may seem—Szell is so good with that oft-recurring violin Read more phrase first heard at bar 24, where he makes a slight accent on the first of the semiquavers, thus pointing the phrase far more strongly...
