...[T]is reissue of a warmly evocative set makes a welcome return to the catalogue. The orchestral sound is particularly beautiful, as one registers in the opening prelude, arid the new transfers are excellent... As a performance this recording, like the one under Plasson which appeared from HMV at about the same time, was quickly overtaken by the Sir Colin Davis set on Philips on most counts. But between the two earlier ones I certainly preferred this with Chailly a warmly understanding conductor and Domingo at his sweetest. Alfredo Kraus on HMV is to my mind well below his usual stylish self,
distressingly so in "Pourquoi me reveiller", where Domingo may not be quite so perceptive of word detail, but the tonal shading is a joy. Elena Obraztsova's vibrato is at times obtrusive, but rather less than usual on record, while Arleen Auger makes an outstanding Sophie.
