Notes and Editorial Reviews

Rossini's cantatas sound more like concert versions of operas, as they are written in much the same dramatic style. Indeed, Rossini composed both sacred and secular cantatas that had specific functions. The secular works often served to entertain nobility or highlight a popular singer of the time. He used his opera sensibility, combining well-crafted arias with a great sensitivity to the requirements of the venue.
'La morte di Didone' was composed as a tribute to a famous soprano, Ester Mombelli. It is not surprising then, that this work is a tour-de-force for the soprano, in this case Mariella Devia, who handles the job easily. Certainly a highlight is the "Se da ciel," with Rossini at his most understated and profound.
'Cantata
Read more in onore del Sommo Pontefice Pio Nono' is an homage to a pope, in this case, Pius IX, who Rossini admired. Written towards the end of the composer's life, the cantata contains elements from four of his lesser-known operas, scaled down and reorchestrated. The cast is strong, especially Michele Pertusi in the "Ah si, d'amor." Conductor Roberto Chailly seems to have a special connection with Rossini, and his temperament shines through brilliantly.
