A great recording December 30, 2011 By Brian Lowery (Kearneysville, WV) See All My Reviews "The best feature is first act, Fontainebleau, making this recording the five act, Italian version. Many good recordings leave out this act, and in doing so they change the opera. It is important to see (and hear) Carlo and Elisabetta as young lovers, flash backs in the four act versions, just don't do it. You also hear the leitmotivs reflecting that love that are used in latter acts. Again without the first act, the same leitmotivs in a four act version don't have a reference. Placido Domingo gives a great performance and Montserrat Cabballé is in fine voice, but she sounds mature during the whole opera. Missing is the youth in her voice in the Fountainebleau scene. What makes this opera so special is that all the major characters change as the story progresses. In the Sony, 5 act recording, Aprile Millo does just that, sounding like a young girl in the beginning and gradually maturing as the opera goes along. Shirley Verrett and Sherril Milnes are excellent in their supportive roles. Ruggero Raimondi does a fine job as Phillip, but in the Sony recording Ferruccio Furlanetto brings out subtleties in the king's character that are missing in Raimondi's performance. The chorus is great, and an important contributor to the overall opera. The conductor, Carlo Maria Giulini, easily out does Von Karajan in another EMI recording of this opera, but just doesn't bring out the drama like James Levine in the previously mentioned Sony recording. It is a great recording and you won't be dissapointed." Report Abuse
