Notes and Editorial Reviews

Reviews of some of the original recordings that make up this set:

Holst: Planets

"A not over-sumptuous Planets, magnificently played." – Malcolm Hayes, BBC Music Magazine

Ormandy's version of The Planets was one of his most impressive records made in the last years before his retirement as principal conductor of the great Philadelphia Orchestra. Clearly the adrenalin is running fast from the very opening of "Mars" and with committed playing from the orchestra this performance is compulsive and rewarding throughout. The aggressive force of "Mars" helped by the fiercely brilliant sound is matched by the contrasting sense of repose in the beautifully
Read more translucent portrayal of "Venus", the sensuality only gently hinted at but certainly coming over.

Ormandy paces the famous central tune of "Jupiter" slowly and accents its outline rather effectively, but the most striking characterization comes with the superbly atmospheric "Saturn" which has a noble melancholy, the sharply vital "Uranus" and the mistily evocative "Neptune", with the ending uncommonly well tapered off.

– Ivan March, Gramophone [8/1981]

Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition

"This one has everything--great playing and a big, gutsy interpretation that not only characterizes each section beautifully but also welds the suite together into an extremely satisfying whole. The panoramic final pages, from the start of the tolling bell section, have no peer in terms of detail and sheer sonic splendor, and this is one of the best-sounding recordings that Ormandy and Philly ever got from Sony. So the bottom line is that if you don't own this and you love the work, you need it, and urgently."

– David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com

Alfvén: Swedish Rhapsody

"Hugo Alfvén’s Swedish Rhapsody No. 1, recorded in 1953, became an Ormandy specialty; folksy and colorful, it’s an ideal showpiece for virtuoso orchestra."

– Richard A. Kaplan, Fanfare

Ives: Second Symphony

Eugene Ormandy’s version of Ives’ Second Symphony might best be described as “fat and heavy”, at least as regards the second movement. Indeed, there’s little variation in speed from the symphony’s opening, though the big, rich string sound has to be heard to be believed and the raucous trombone playing offers the essence of Ivesian panache."

– David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday

Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde

"In sum a beautiful performance of Mahler’s late masterpiece, especially from the point of view of conductor and the orchestra. But there is more to this work than what lies on the surface and Ormandy's apparent stress on those symphonic aspects seems to encourage him in his refinement of everything else. Lewis's detachment seems to have point. Ormandy doesn't really impress as a Mahlerian in this most elusive of works. He is saved by his wonderful orchestra who, in spite of some slightly faster tempi than we are used to, make this a performance to be enjoyed."

A Personal Favorite March 31, 2014 By Albert B. (Conshohocken, PA) See All My Reviews "Having spent my young adulthood as a subscriber to Ormandy's Philadelphia Orchestra, choosing this collection was not difficult. Many an evening was spent in the nose-bleed section of the Academy of Music soaking in "That Philadelphia Sound" developed by Stokowski and brought to fruition by Ormandy. As I am getting older, with hearing that is not as sharp as it once was, I now tend to choose works based on performance rather than state of the art digital quality. This is not a criticism of the quality of these recordings, let those with perfect ears make that call, but to my tastes, this is an excellent collection of performances. It brings back many memories of the "Grand Old Lady of Locust Street"!" Report Abuse
Ormandy Classics April 24, 2013 By edward heller (lansdale, PA) See All My Reviews "This set is an excellent review of both conductor and orchestra at their best. The sound is first class on all discs. Ormandy was always under rated as a conductor but here's sonic proof of his true abilties. The Shostakovich Fifth Symphony is a gem." Report Abuse
Superb December 31, 2012 By M. Hereish (Chandler, QC) See All My Reviews "When you want to have these on CD. This is a wonderful version." Report Abuse
