Notes and Editorial Reviews

Henryk Szeryng; Concertgebouw Orchestra/Bernard Haitink. Originally released on Philips 416 418-2 [with Romances, Opp. 40 and 50] (originally released 1971).

Szeryng and Haitink offer an Olympian view of this great work, taking a broad tempo in the opening movement and building climaxes of enormous force. There is a remarkable urgency to Szeryng’s playing, an intensity of tone and rhetoric that verges on the incendiary, but there is considerable delicacy and poetry as well. The Dutch orchestra plays with regal authority, and Philips’ analog recording is thrillingly immediate and full-bodied. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.

The best there is December 4, 2015 By Morris Reagan (Madison, MS) See All My Reviews "This recording absolutely deserves its place on ArkivMusic's "Recommended" list. I first heard this record on LP soon after it was released in the 1970s. I have a number of recordings of Beethoven's great violin concerto, including the ones by Menuhin, Heifetz and others, but this Philips recording tops them all, CERTAINLY from the standpoint of sound quality and balance and perhaps from the musicality of the performance as well. The recordings made by Philips in the 1970s topped that of all other recording companies at that time in my opinion. I'm glad to have the performance now on CD." Report Abuse
