Notes and Editorial Reviews

Libretto not included.

Das Rheingold starts the cycle remarkably successfully. Haitink’s grasp of both music and drama is remarkably certain and he secures playing of immediacy from his Bavarian forces. Generally, details are not overlooked within the work’s architecture The Prelude to scene 1 does not quite carry the sense of inevitability with it that others on disc do—Böhm or Karajan, for example—but its tonal weight is more apt than Boulez’s “lighter” reading. Precision also marks much of the Rheinmaidens’ singing in the opening scene, even if slightly more impetuousness would be welcome. As commented in 30:4, James Morris’s Wotan is committed. It is an oddity to have two different singers cast as Fricka, though both
Read more Lipovšek and Meier have voices whose strengths match the overall emphatic range of the parts they sing. Rappé’s Erda—also found in Siegfried—projects an other-worldly presence, and Haage’s Mime continues to impress. Zednik’s Loge has plenty of character in the voice, as does Theo Adam’s Alberich. Tschammer and Rydl are imposing as Fasolt and Fafner, but the recording engineering helps their cause slightly. Eva Johansson’s Freia was steadier of tone at the time of recording than she can be these days. Smaller roles are generally excellently taken.
