Notes and Editorial Reviews

Haitink turned 85 on March 4, 2014 and this set presents his six complete symphonic cycles by cornerstone classical composers: Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, Schumann and Tchaikovsky. Originally recorded for Philips, the CDs are now smartly re-packaged in a collectible cube.

Every single symphonic cycle is played by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, recently voted by Gramophone Magazine as ‘The Greatest Orchestra in the World’.

Dutch-born Bernard Haitink made his debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra on November 7, 1956. From 1963 Haitink was Principal Conductor, a position he held for 25 years. An exclusive Philips artist for more than 30 years, Haitink remains fully active on the international concert

The Power Might and Majesty in this Recording for June 16, 2014 By Daniel McGarigle (El Segundo, CA) See All My Reviews "June 16, 2014 I have heard Beethoven's Fifth Symphony recorded and played by more than two hundred orchestras over my 60 years of listening experience. THIS IS THE MOST MASSIVELY, AND CORRECTLY TEMPO'ED, FIFTH EVER PERFORMED AND RECORDED. I don't know if extra players were added to each section of the orchestra, but the sheer size, volume, massive sound and perfect tempos make this the greatest 5th I have ever heard. If ladies are in the audience wearing their hats, then they may retrieve their hats on the rear aisles of the auditorium after the performance because the sheerly massive sound from the orchestra will surely blow their hats off. And the gentlemen in the audience had best just hold on to the bottoms of their seats or their bodies may also be lifted and blown to the rear aisles of the auditorium with the ladies hats. Never have I heard such a physically massive sound come from an orchestra, and that includes Bernstein performances in Lincoln Center AND Carnegie Hall, Ormandy at the Academy in Philadelphia, Szell in Cleveland and ANY other performances you would care to name. This performance by Mr. Haitink has EVERY TEMPO PERFECT which is no small part of making THIS such a masterful performance. In EVERY movement Mr. Haitian NAILS the perfect tempo causing Beethoven's own mind's thinking of how each section of each movement is to sound, by literally rattling the listener's entire skeletal and muscular structures with the intent that Beethoven MUST have had when he wrote the entire symphony. Beethoven did not write the Fifth to be heard or analyzed or listened to or to wave one's arms to or tap one's feet to. NO ! Beethoven wrote the Fifth to give the listener a DIRECT CONTACT TO THE POWER, MIGHT, BREADTH and SIZE of the Creator Himself, in other words, to give the listener a DIRECT CONTACT WITH GOD THAT WILL BE FOREVER INSTILLED IN THE MIND AND BODY OF THE LISTENER. Certainly the Fifth is Divinely inspired music. We have had to wait for Haitink's performance to bring GOD ALIVE IN EACH ONE OF US BY GIVING EACH OF US A DIRECT CONTACT WITH GOD. Joyfully that is exactly what Mr. Haitink and the London Symphony Orchestra have done. We are all indebted to them, and to the producers and crews of this performance. No previous performance of Beethoven’s Fifth comes anywhere near to approaching what Mr. Haitink and company have done with this one. After this recording, the rest of us may just as well burn our instruments and go home. This is the performance for the ages." Report Abuse
