Notes and Editorial Reviews

There's some wonderful music on this CD, highlighting some of Victoria's woefully under-recorded polychoral works--among them the eight-part Mass Ave Regina caelorum and motets Dixit Dominus, Laudate Dominum omnes gentes, and Ave Maria, as well as the 12-voice Laetatus sum--but unfortunately, this otherwise excellent program is seriously hampered by harsh, saturated sound uncharacteristic of Hyperion and the Westminster Cathedral Choir's usual first-class productions. If you're interested in a particular work, a few of the ones performed here are available on various other recordings in better sound--but you'll be hard-pressed to find the Mass or the four-part Magnificat septimi toni anywhere else. Apparently the Westminster Cathedral can Read more be a tricky place to record voices--a handful of the choir's recordings over the past couple of decades have displayed a somewhat glassy quality in the treble, but not to this degree. Still, as mentioned above, the music here is worth hearing by anyone who wants to get to know a neglected side of Victoria, one that in many respects shows its roots in the 16th-century Italian cathedral style that influenced Victoria's early years as a musician.
