Giovanni Paisiello was both popular and prolific. Gli zingari in Fiera is a genial comedy, written midway through an operatic career that spanned from 1764 to 1808. It is not a flashy score, but is always tuneful and occasionally quite charming. The book introduces two plots: (1) Eleuterio, in order to inherit a deceased man’s fortune must find and marry the deceased man’s niece who was abandoned in the woods when she was a baby; and (2) the servant girl Stellidaura, found abandoned in the woods by a dotty old man, Pandolfo, wants to play a trick on Pandolfo. The gypsies butt in to help Stellidaura and one of them marries Pandolfo. The music is much better than the plot, which is mostly doggerel and is not helped by the awkward English translation.

The performers at the 2008 Paisiello Festival treat the opera with respect and bring the right note of lighthearted charm to the piece. All of the voices are good; the conductor finds tempos that suit the action and moods. It is a live performance, recorded with clarity and a good balance between singers and orchestra. The recording is not blemished by intrusive stage and audience noises or too much applause. All in all, it’s two hours of pleasant light opera.
