TOO SERIOUS, UPTIGHT October 10, 2014 By Morris Reagan (Madison, MS) See All My Reviews "A performance of the Christmas Oratorio should radiate some sense of joy, especially in the opening chorus. Although I have no problem with the SOUND of the music, Harnoncourt seems very uptight and nervous throughout the performance and he communicates this attitude to the viewer of this DVD and, I think, also to the performers. Harnoncourt seems absolutely hell-bent on performing the work exactly as he believes Bach would have performed it, never mind the aesthetic sensibility of today's music-loving public. But in defense of Harnoncourt I'd like to add that his DVD of Bach's St. John's Passion comes across very well because Harnoncourt's dour demeanor is far more in keeping with the spirit of Passion music than it is with Christmas music. I would love to see a DVD of the Christmas Oratorio performed by the St. Thomas Choir (Leipzig) under the direction of Georg Christoph Biller." Report Abuse
