Notes and Editorial Reviews

Energy and excitement as Dudamel’s young players take on Tchaikovsky

Gustavo Dudamel and his supercharged orchestra seem to mature by leaps with every release. They throw themselves into the drama of this great symphony with everything they have – if, for me, they miss the refinement of a Pletnev, the sense of pain all the more cutting for the sufferer’s self-restraint, that is patently not what Dudamel is all about.

A Large Response April 1, 2014 By M. Hazen (Jacksonville, FL) See All My Reviews "Maestro Dudamel has gathered a large group of his country's young people and created the Simon Bolivar Orchestra. When he conducts them, he receives magical music. There are so many participating in each performance that their sound is large. I have always loved Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 5". I have my favorite recording but I wanted to hear what Dudamel could produce. It was also large! I listened to the parts that really set my spirit on high gear. But they weren't the same with this recording. The performance is wonderful. But the Russian recording that I claim is best is truly excellent, but not a large response! Yes, it is a fine recording!"
