![]() This is the 19th recording in the distinguished Klavier Wind Recording Project, an ongoing series that takes up where the prestigious Fennell Eastman Wind Ensemble recordings on Mercury Living Presence left off, but with even better sound and often finer performances. All of the performances are conducted by Eugene Corporon, one of those rare band directors who deserves to be mentioned when we talk about great maestros. This current collection presents works by five Americans and one English composer (Adam Gorb) that range from the jovial Gorb, through the acerbic and dissonant Bassett, to the hypnotic Russell Peck tone poem, with its incessant drum beat, and culminating in Frank Ticheli's moody, blues tinged composition, Blue Shades. Snuggled in the middle is an intriguing set of musical caricature portraits in varying styles by Jere Hutcheson, which includes pictures in sound of such disparate well-knowns as Marcel Marceau, Edgar Allan Poe, Andy Warhol, and Emma Thompson! The Klavier series has been as notable for its engineering as for its performances. Whether it is a single solo instrument playing, or the entire band, the sound has uncanny presence and clarity. There is a good stage depth, too, something not usually found in recordings of wind ensembles, and some really focused, solid bass drum for subwoofer freaks. If you are looking for good recordings of wind ensemble and band literature, or simply looking for great sounding recordings of music that has been unjustly neglected by the mainstream, you can't go wrong with this series. --Rad Bennett, ClassicsToday.com |
